Additional Details

Uncle Sam has posted a "Help Wanted" notice on the White House, and here notifies three of the eager applicants (Bell, Breckinridge, and Douglas) that the position has been filled: "I've concluded to take down the notice and let Old Abe have the place. I find his record all right, and can safely trust him with the management of my affairs." Lincoln, sans beard and carrying an axe, says "Thank you, sir, I will endeavor to do my duty." Meanwhile, Buchanan packs up his bag of dirty linen, and frets that without a character reference he'll never find another job. Peters, Currier & Ives 1690; Reilly 1860-32.
